Dr. Vivek Phakey graduated with First Class Honours from Monash University in 1984 and completed his ophthalmology training in Melbourne and Glasgow before establishing Waverley Eye Clinic in 1994.

Renuka Bathija is a general ophthalmologist with a sub-specialty interest in glaucoma. Renuka completed her ophthalmology training from Melbourne University and subsequently completed her Glaucoma fellowship at Shiley Eye Center (University of California, San Diego).
Dr Bathija has been consulting at Waverley Eye Clinic since 1998 and provides a wealth of experience in general ophthalmology and in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma.

Dr Janice Thean graduated with first class honours from Monash University with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 1996 and was awarded the only medal in the undergraduate Ophthalmology Prize Exam. She trained in Ophthalmology at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH). She is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. After completing her specialty fellowship exams in 2003, she spent an elective year at the RVEEH gaining further experience in cataract
surgery and was involved in high level research and teaching of ophthalmology specialty trainees. She has published numerous papers in peer reviewed journals and has held consultant positions at the RVEEH and the Western General Hospital in Footscray.
Dr Thean is a general ophthalmologist who manages both adult and paediatric patients. Her main interest is cataract surgery including correction of astigmatism using Toric lenses. Dr. Thean also has interests including:

Dr Himanshu Solanki is an experienced Ophthalmologist with subspecialty training in cataract surgery, corneal disease, refractive surgery, and medical retina.
As a Visiting Consultant, Dr Solanki is actively involved in teaching corneal and cataract surgery at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and Monash Health. He also serves as the Head of Unit, Acute Ophthalmology Services, at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.
He completed his medical degree and specialist ophthalmology training in India, where he practised as an ophthalmologist for more than five years before relocating to Australia for advanced subspecialty training.

Dr Hema Karthik is a Comprehensive Ophthalmologist with more than two decades of clinical experience. Dr Karthik completed her specialist ophthalmology training in 2005 from the prestigious Regional Institute of Ophthalmology and Government Ophthalmic Hospital (RIOGOH) in Chennai, India, the second-oldest eye hospital in the world after Moorfield’s Eye Hospital in the UK.
She moved to Australia in 2006 and made Darwin her home while working as a senior consultant at the Royal Darwin Hospital. She has delivered extensive services to our First National people through her work in NT Health. In 2011, she obtained additional qualifications from The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow (FRCS Glasg) and the International Council of Ophthalmology (FICO). Dr Karthik then completed a fellowship in Medical Retina and Oculoplastics at The Mater Health Services and Queensland Eye Institute in 2016.
Dr Karthik is actively involved with The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology (RANZCO). She serves as the Chair of the Examinations and Assessments Committee at RANZCO and leads the assessment and examination program for all RANZCO trainees from Australia and New Zealand. She is also a Member of RANZCO’s Education and Curriculum Committees and served as Chair of OBCK Committee from 2022-26. She holds senior consultant positions at RVEEH, Broadmeadows Hospital and Yarra Ranges Health in Melbourne.

Dr William Yan is a fellowship-trained consultant ophthalmologist specialising in medical retina and vitreoretinal surgery, with extensive local and international training. His clinical interests include complex cataract surgery and disorders of the vitreous and retina, including vitreomacular traction, vitreous haemorrhage, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, and retinal detachment.
Dr Yan is a consultant ophthalmologist at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and a researcher at the Centre for Eye Research Australia, University of Melbourne. He has authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications.
He completed his medical degree at Monash University, followed by a Master of Philosophy in Ophthalmology at the University of Melbourne, where he was awarded the RB McComas Research Scholarship. He was subsequently awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to pursue further studies in bioinformatics and a Master of Science at Stanford University.
Dr Yan undertook specialist ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH) and completed advanced subspecialty fellowships in medical retina and vitreoretinal surgery in Australia (RVEEH) and the United Kingdom.
